NSB/MD Delegation visit to Lebanon


Between 28 and 30 May, Lebanon hosted an official Polish delegation representing the Ministry of Defense and the National Security Bureau. The role of the head of the delegation was committed to Minister Władysław Stasiak, chief of the National Security Bureau. He was accompanied by his Deputy, Brigadier General Roman Polko and Under-Secretary of State of National Defense, Mr. Bogusław Winid.

The first day of the visit was spent on meetings with the highest of Lebanese authorities. Minister Stasiak spoke to the President of the Lebanese Republic Emile Lahoud, Chief of Staff of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Shawki Al Masri and the leader of the governmental majority, coalitional fraction "Future" Saad Hariri. The main issues of the talks concerned cooperation between Lebanon and Poland, the Middle East situation and the mission of Polish soldiers.

The delegation spent its next day in the South of Lebanon visiting Polish soldiers of the Military Contingent UNIFIL.

In the military base of Naqoura, the delegation met the Deputy Commander of UNIFIL General J.P. Nehra. The talks involved mentioning the tasks of Polish soldiers and the conditions of realizing the mission. The delegation also visited the soldiers of the logistic battalion POLLOG, the reconstruction sub-unit "Skorpion" in Tybnin as well as the base of the Polish Operational Company in Marjayoun, "Cervantes" base. During the visit in Marjayoun, Minister Stasiak met the commander of "Sector East" General Brigadier R.M. Ambrosio.

During the stay in Beirut the delegation also met the representatives of the "Polish Community in Lebanon". Encyclopedias, textbooks and computer programs were given to the Polish School in Beirut.
